Anterograde amnesia, which is caused in man by lesions of the hippocampo-mammillary system, may fundamentally consist in a deficit of recognition memory (familiarity discrimination). Six experiments on the behavioural effects of similar lesions in rats demonstrated an inability to discriminate familiarity in the lesioned animals and suggested that this deficit may explain the pattern of results in previous experiments on hippocampal lesions in animals.
