The article discusses the creation of an artificial salivary gland through the synergy between genetic and tissue engineering. An artificial salivary gland is necessary to remedy salivary hypofunction and loss of salivary acinar cells in patients suffering from cancer of the head and neck. Its essential elements are polarized ephithelial cell layer, biodegradable substratum, and a coating of an extracellular matrix protein on the substratum's luminal surface.
