Abstract This study attempts to record the ancient ‘reredos’ at Adisham Church, Kent, a monument that is very little known. It is an exotic survival from the pre-history of English wooden church furniture. The ambiguous assemblage too often seems to sabotage one's efforts to make sense of it, yet demands to be taken seriously. We attempt to explain what its original function was, with the help of dendrochronological and polychrome analysis, as well as a rigorous examination of the joinery construction. Bearing in mind its traditional provenance to Christ Church, Canterbury, it was tempting to try to prove the posited metropolitan link. However, in the end we must reluctantly accept that a specific attribution to any particular greater church in Kent is impossible. Such an attempt would distract from the better appreciation of this incontrovertibly important object.
