Comments on an article by Max Coltheart (see record 2008-03824-001). The author has challenged researchers to produce an example of a study in which neurovascular effects decide between two competing models of a cognitive process. This paper falls short of addressing this challenge, but it does present blood oxygenation level-dependant (BOLD) signal data that support an assumption that underlies a model of sentence comprehension. It thus illustrates that neuroimaging can provide evidence relevant to the nature of cognitive operations. Coltheart could argue that the BOLD signal data do no more than corroborate the reaction times (RT) data, but we would suggest that the extent of the BOLD signal effect is impressive evidence for a difference between these sentence types.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
