There is a never-ending flow of books dealing with malignant melanoma, reflecting both the serious nature of this problem and the immense progress being made. This compact, well-organized little volume put together by David Elder is certainly a helpful contribution to the field. Physicians from Dr. Elder's group in Philadelphia, as well as from major melanoma research centers around the world, have contributed 11 very useful chapters dealing with clinical, histopathologic, and epidemiologic problems. Dr. Elder has achieved something unique for editors of multiauthor review volumes; he has put together a book that has cohesion, similarity of style, and very little needless repetition. I do not know if he simply guided his authors well or if he actually edited their work, but in any event the result is pleasing. Perhaps the three most outstanding chapters are those by Dr. Eider and his longtime coworker, Wallace H. Clark, Jr., M.D., on the developmental biology of malignant melanoma and on tumor progression and prognosis in malignant melanoma, as well as the chapter by Dr. Elder alone on metastatic melanoma. Another section that I found particularly valuable was that by Dr. Sagebiel on the practical aspects of melanoma microstaging with very specific recommendations for laboratory interpretation of this tumor. Another chapter that pleased me was that by DuPont Guerry IV, M.D., on control of mortality from malignant melanoma, which dealt with the various public education efforts on malignant melanoma. Since I am involved with the New Mexico Melanoma Registry and have had a chance to observe Dr. Jack Redman's New Mexico Melanoma Project, it was rewarding to me to see these activities as well as similar ones around the globe recognized amidst more scientific articles. Clear/y, all of the material in this book has been published in one form or another elsewhere, but, in contrast to most of its competitor volumes, I think you would have to look far and wide to obtain so many up-to-date articles on the hottest topics of malignant melanoma. For this reason, I strongly recommend Pathobiology of Malignant Melanoma. The price of $96.75 for such a thin book will, of course, discourage many. However, just as I have become philosophic about the price of Swiss watches and Swiss army knives, I guess I now need to become philosophic about the price of Swiss medical books. This masterpiece should be available to all physicians interested in malignant melanoma, regardless of cost. We owe a vote of thanks to Dr. Elder and his fellow authors.
