Studies of the amygdaloid complex have been made by the classic authors (Dejerine, Kolliker, Konegger, Gamer, Meynert, Burdach, Mondino, et al.). Later appeared the fundamental works of Volsch ( 'lo), Johnston ( '23), Foix and Nicolesco ('as), Hilpert ('28) and others. More recently the amygdala has been extensively studied particularly in this country, by Humphrey ('36) in the bat, Fox ('40) in the cat, Crosby and Humphrey in man ( '41) and in the shrew ( '44), and Jeserich ('45) in the mink. A wide variety of forms have been analyzed and a remarkable consistency has been shown in the main divisions of this complex. I n 1938 however, a study of the human amygdala by Brockhaus appeared which uses an entirely different terminology and subdivides each of the main nuclei. Lauer ('45) has studied the amygdaloid complex of the monkey, but has not made extensive subdivisions in the light of the findings of Brockhaus. In order to determine how the two interpretations compared it was decided to subdivide the amygdala of the
