9 0 4 Brief clinical and laboratory observations The Journal of Pediatrics June 1975 mia, bears close resemblance to that found in adults with the same condition. 7 The significant increase in concentration of ascorbic acid in leukocytes has been explained on the basis of decreased catabolism of ascorbic acid in iron deficiency anemia. Reduction of the ascorbic acid level in WBC after seven days of therapy may be explained by an increase in the utilization of ascorbic acid.It has been shown that in iron deficiency anemia, reduced glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells is increased. 12 The exact mechanism of this increase is not well understood, but has been explained as a mechanism to protect hemoglobin from oxidation. It may be considered that the increased concentration of ascorbic acid in red blood cells, accompanying iron deficiency, is also for the protection of hemoglobin from oxidation in a manner analogous to that suggested for glutathione. It seems more likely, however, that in the iron deficiency state, the increase in the level of ascorbic acid in the erythrocyte at the beginning is simply related to a decreased utilization of ascorbic acid, since the concentration of ascorbic acid in the erythrocyte returned to normal following seven days of therapy. In cases of iron deficiency plus infection, the mean concentration of vitamin C in leukocytes was not increased significantly. The plasma level of ascorbic acid was significantly lower than the normal value, possibly reflecting a relationship between infection and vitamin C.
