Symptoms of 50 women at the climacteric were submitted to a principal factor analysis. Two main independent factors emerged representing psychological and somatic symptoms. A 3rd and smaller factor also emerged independent of the 2 main ones. This was identified as a specific vasomotor factor. Plotting subjects weighted factor scores against each other revealed normal bivariate distributions in all 3 cases. There is no intrinsic relationship between the central vasomotor symptoms of the climacteric and the accompanying psychological and somatic symptoms.
