Quantitative relations between nerve centers and peripheral area of innervation have been studied extensively in amphibia and the chick, largely by limb bud extirpation and transplantation. A certain degree of adjustment of nerve centers has been definitely established. This adjustment is particularly evident in sensory ganglia. The motor centers do not seem to be capable of hyperplastic development when their peripheral areas is increased, whereas the sensory ganglia that are overloaded respond with cellular increase (for the chick, see Hamburger and Levi-Montalcini,’49). However, the enlargement of the ganglia that innervate a transplanted limb is in no case proportional to the enlargement of the peripheral area. The reason for this limitation has remained unexplained. It cannot be due to an inherent restriction of the growth potential of the ganglia because NGF (nerve growth factors) can increase the number and size of sensory ganglia cells to a higher degree
