The Eighth International workshop on the fragile X syndrome and X-linked mental retardation was held at the Isaiah Tubbs Convention Centre near Picton, Ontario from August 16–22, 1997. This was the first time the workshop has been held in Canada. It was hosted by Jeanette Holden, Maire Percy, and Diane Allingham-Hawkins, who gratefully acknowledge the support provided by the chairs of the various sessions not only for their assistance during the workshop but also during its organization and the review of manuscripts for the proceedings. Approximately 90 participants from 20 countries attended the workshop (Fig. 1). Attendees were met at the airport in Toronto by Kathy Yang and Chris Trevors (Kingston, Ontario), and guided to the Days Inn for the Welcome Reception on Saturday evening. In keeping with some of the previous workshops, luggage did not arrive with one of the attendees. Most participants arrived on Saturday to take advantage of a preworkshop tour. Following breakfast on Sunday morning, the workshop participants began the preworkshop tour, travelling by chartered buses south to view the spectacular Niagara Falls (from the Canadian side). After a walk around the gardens, we toured the area, arriving at Château des Chârmes for a guided tour of the winery and tasting session. A lunch of salmon, salads,‘‘the most tender and juicy corn in the world,’’and desserts galore catered by Pillar and Post (Niagara on the Lake) was served outside the Château des Chârmes with a view of the vineyards. Following a walk through the vineyards and the purchase of the Château’s famous ice wine, participants continued the tour north through Toronto.
