Electrophoretic deposition of functionally graded hardmetals is discussed in this paper. With respect to WC-Co hardmetals, cobalt powder can be incorporated in a deposit of WC even though it does not deposit from the medium when present alone. Functionally graded WC-Co hardmetal plates are produced with a gradient in cobalt content going from 6w/o cobalt on the hard side up to 17w/o on the soft side. To reach full density, the deposits have to be sintered either by solid state or liquid phase sintering. Whereas the cobalt gradient was disappeared after liquid phase sintering, it remained after solid state sintering at 1290°C.
