To reduce the chronological chaos or zonal metachroneity which has arisen from the widespread use of pollen zonations based on phytogeographic criteria of regional relevance only, the following cyclical climatic scheme is proposed for the chronological sequence of glicial/interglacial episodes during the Late Pliocene - Pleistocene:Microthermal(MIT)—minimal warmth;Megathermal(MET)—maximal warmth; andKatathermal(KAT)—decreasing warmth.
