An empirical model describing the effect of solvent on physicochemical properties measured in solution is de-scribed. It is proposed that the solvent effect depends directly on the Lewis acidity and Lewis basicity of the solvent, the relative contributionsof these interactions being estimated for a given solvent using the Dimroth-Reichardt acidity parameter and the Gutmann donor number, respectively. The empirical equation has been tested with more than 30sets of experimental data describing solvent effects on parameters related to ion-solvent and ion-ion interactions. A successful correlation was obtained in 90% of the cases considered.
