A system of purely instrumental neutron activation analysis in which no chemical operations are employed Is described. It consists solely of neutron activation followed by-ray spectrom-etry. Even with the relatively low thermal neutron flux available from the Van de GraafF accelerator photo-neutron source(10s neutrons sec.-1 cm.-2), useful analyses have been carried out for more than 25 elements, in many cases with sensitivities in the parts-per-million range. In general, the method is much faster than chemical or spectroscopic methods of equal sensitivity and accuracy; it is non-destructive and is relatively free of serious interferences. No sample preparation is involved. It is useful not only for measurement of trace concentrations, but, because of its great speed, is also chosen for analyses of many elements at macro concen-trations. Activation plus counting total only about 1 0 minutes per sample.
