ULTRAVIOLET light is the major cause of human skin cancer, and papillomas and malignant carcinomas have been induced in the skins of rats and mice by repeated exposure to it1–5. Pound6 reported that although a single short exposure of mouse skin to ultraviolet light did not induce any tumours, when the single exposure was followed by repeated applications of croton oil, many tumours were induced. Thus ultraviolet light acted as an initiator in the two-stage process of skin tumour development7,8. X rays can induce oncogenic transformation of cells in culture9,10, and a preliminary report has appeared on the transformation of hamster embryo cells by ultraviolet light11.
