METHODA randomly selected group of married primiparous women delivered at a general hospital were interviewed regarding a large variety of data relating to their pregnancy and puerperium approximately 13 weeks after delivery. Objective data on their deliveries was obtained from their hospital records. The interview lasted about I+ hr, and the women were questioned about their sexual behaviour, including their ability to achieve orgasm during intercourse, towards the end of the interview when good rapport had usually been achieved. They were not asked about their ability to achieve orgasm by means other than sexual intercourse.Of 59 women who could be-traced, and whose family doctors had not refused permission to interview them, 54 were successfully interviewed. The women who had achieved orgasm during intercourse before the pregnancy were compared with those who had not done so. The significance of the difference between the orgasmic and non-orgasmic women was assessed at the two-tailed level using Fisher’s exact probability test or the r-test.
