The threat of a bioterrorist reintroduction of smallpox has forced public health authorities to dust off procedures long thought to have been put away forever. The current smallpox vaccine is the same as that used before universal vaccination ended in the United States in 1972, and its method of administration differs little from Edward Jenner’s procedure of 1796. Preparing to deal with the complications of vaccination has meant reviving a therapy developed in the early 1950s that employs vaccinia immune globulin (VIG), a product derived from the pooled plasma of vaccinated individuals.
