Imagine viewing a basketball game on the Net from the viewpoint of your favorite player. This would be possible if a new and expanding research field called immersive telepresence (IT) succeeds. IT researchers seek to transform recordings of real events and environments into digital scenes that remote users could interactively view from any perspective desired. While this is a daunting task, this currently embryonic technology promises enormous rewards in such applications as teleconferencing, remote medical consultations, and new forms of entertainment such as 3D digital video. The reason for IEEE MultiMedia's interest in this field and for organizing this theme issue is clear. IT integrates video and real-time interactive graphics, a marriage of well-developed, dynamic technologies that will give IT great utility as a communications medium. Like video, new information in this medium arrives at every frame during the presentation. In contrast to conventional algorithm-intensive, model-based graphics, therefore, we can characterize IT as a data-intensive medium. Since computer graphics hardware and software are generally not designed to manipulate an already well-defined model, they don't handle data-driven frame-rate changes very well. Hence advances in both areas are essential for this new medium to become of practical, widespread use.
