METHODSThe EEGs of 104 patients, ages birth to 18 years, were included. The subjects represented a consecutive series of pediatric patients referred for evaluation with the diagnosis of seizure or suspected seizure. All EEGs were recorded on a TECA DG32 digital EEG machine (Teca Corporation, Pleasantville, NY.) after sleep deprivation using standard techniques (American Electroencephalographic Society, 1994). The sample rate was 240/s with 12-bit resolution. All studies used the 10-20 International System of electrode placement. Eighteen channels of EEG were recorded on referential and bipolar montages and were at least 30 minutes long. Hyperventilation was performed in all patients who were old enough to cooperate, and photic stimulation was performed in all patients. The EEG technologist conducted the studies as if they were being recorded on paper, using four predetermined referential and bipolar montages. The technologist changed the filter settings and sensitivity during the recording as necessary. All studies were stored on optical disk. In addition, a proportion of them (n= 57) were also printed on paper. The paper was 21.5 cm in height, and usually at least 16 channels were displayed. One second encompassed 30 mm. The DG32 EEG machine video screen used for all the digital interpretations was 23 cm in width and 18 cm in height (area containing traces). One second encompassed 23 mm.
