The development of the eye of a stylommatophoran snail, Helix aspersa. was studied by electron microscopy at various stages of morphogenesis from the initial invagination of the embryonic ectoderm to form an eyecup to the fully differentiated organ in the adult. Special attention was given to the origin of the photoreceptoral organelles, the rhabdomeres, as arrays of microvilli from the luminal surfaces of presumptive receptoral cells and to the source of lens and vitreous humor from secretory granules produced in Golgi centers of prospective corneal, supportive, and sensory cells. Although the cells of the optic vesicle possess rudimentary cilia, all microvilli arise by folding of cell membranes independently of the cilia. Also studied was the differentiation of pigment granules in supportive cells, neurites and neural vesicles of sensory cells, tonofilaments and desmosomes of pigmented and glial cells, and collagenous fibers of the optic capsule.
