Proteins in the outer segment of visual cells undergo continual renewal. The protein is synthesized in the cell inner segment. In rods, but not in cones, the entire outer segment (including the protein) is renewed by continual formation of new discs coupled with a balanced shedding of old discs. In both rods and cones, there is an additional renewal process in which new protein becomes diffusely distributed among the old discs. This diffuse protein renewal process takes place at a rate which is significantly higher in cones.
