This chapter showcases methodologically innovative work in the psychological and social sciences that is qualitative and longitudinal in its research approach and for which questions about time and temporal experience are of significant interest. It considers the case for conducting qualitative inquiries longitudinally and for putting concern for the significance of time and temporality in people’s lives at the heart of empirical, interpretive studies (Neale & Flowerdew, 2003). Time is useful to social researchers as a vehicle of study, because it provides a means of designing studies around key moments, transitions, trajectories, and periods of elapsed time of longer duration so that significant change is more likely to have occurred. It can also be treated as a topic of study, for which the substantive research focus is on how people think about and relate to time, to open up to scrutiny the range of ways in which life is experienced and made sense of temporally (Salmon, 1985). Time is a multidimensional construct and, for this reason, needs to be approached not just biographically but generationally and historically (Neale, 2007).(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
