In the course of studies of permeation of electrolytically generated hydrogen through membranes of palladium and the palladium alloy Pd77Ag23, further observations have been made of steady-state permeation rate accelerations on interruption of electrolysis. These findings further support proposals of the existence of non-linear steady-state hydrogen concentration profiles through the thickness of the membrane. They are also consistent with explanations of certain other permeation rate phenomena, such as “uphill effects”, in terms of Gorsky effects self-induced by permeating interstitials, that can significantly contribute additionally to Fickian concentration gradient considerations.
