A review of the theoretical and experimental published plasma chromatograph data reveals that a standard error of±20% is to be expected if mass estimates for structurally unrelated compounds are made on the basis of mo-bility data alone. An investigation of a series of polynuclear hydrocarbon ions, reported in this study, indicates that the standard error for such structurally related com-pounds can be as much as an order of magnitude lower (±2%). Even in this case, identification of the ion species based solely upon mobility data is at best speculative and should be discouraged. The measured values of mobility are, however, characteristic of the sample material and can be used without resorting to an empirical “mass-mobility” relationship, for identification in the same manner as retention times are used in gas chromatography.
