An accurate method for determining the effects of polymerization variables and catalysts on the amounts of c/s-1, 4, trans-1, 4, 1, 2, and 3, 4 additions in isoprene polymerizations was desired. More accurate and reproducible re-sults for the c/s-1, 4 and trans-1, 4 determinations could be obtained by using absorbance measurements of bands at 8.84 and 8.68 microns, and the previously suggested correlation of these bandswith thesestructures is con-firmed. In many polymerizing systems for isoprene, additional structures are formed and a method was developed which takes into account the absorption. due to these structures. The compositions of typical polyisoprenes are given. Hevea and balata are not completely c/s-1, 4-and trans-1, 4-poly-isoprenes, but contain some isopropenyl structure. The effects of changes in polymerization conditions and catalysts can be determined with certainty and this has aided in the development of synthetic" natural" rubbers. The simi-larity to Hevea of these and other syn-thetic polyisoprenes can be determined.
