Turbulence in current history may be noted with its financial bubbles, military surges, economic depressions, political upheavals, technological surprises and environmental transformations. Intellectual efforts to tease out major cause-andeffect sequences as linear narratives in such multidimensional turbulence might become Sisyphean: a dynamic phenomenon that might seem to act linearly for a decade or two could then flip non-linearly into an unexpected and unwanted systemic manifestation. Thinking back to my 80th year, I dimly perceive a 25-year-long ‘happening’ from 1968 to 1993; say, related to efforts to resolve numerous environmental difficulties within our Great Laurentian Basin waters. At least 25 persons shared interactive leadership in this emergent happening. Here I focus on several seminal efforts–only some of theirs–to this complex emergence by Jack Vallentyne and Richard Vollenweider. Professional collegiality–in which mutualistic reciprocity across disciplines, jurisdictions and genders dwarfed antagonistic rivalries–suffused these initiatives. Let’s call that quarter-century-long happening our ‘Great Laurentian Spring’ or GLS. Both Jack Vallentyne and Richard Vollenweider had internationally recognized accomplishments before they came together with colleagues in about 1968 to initiate our Great Laurentian Spring. Again, to try to tease out some linear causal narrative of what Jack and Richard each contributed over subsequent decades would be inconsistent, as a methodology. So I will sketch a small number of complex events or happenings in their seminal activities. Both Jack Vallentyne and Richard Vollenweider worked to extend their local and regional perspectives to the biospheric scale. Richard (Vollenweider, 1990, 1992) related to the concept of ‘the world river’ proposed by his friend Ramon Margalef (1990). Jack, in his Johnny Biosphere persona, carried an animated globe of the biosphere on his back (Vallentyne, 1990).
