The publication of Adios Muchachos: A Memoir of the Sandinista Revolution by Sergio Ramırez coincides with the renowned Nicaraguan author’s seventieth birthday and the fiftieth anniversary of his life as a writer. This fascinating inside account of the Sandinista Revolution is a welcome addition to the surprisingly limited number of works available in English by Ramırez, who has published dozens of prize-winning novels, collections of short stories, political writings, and historical studies. Ramırez was involved at the highest levels in the efforts to overthrow the Somoza dictatorship in the late 1970s and, after the triumph of the revolution, served in the Government Junta for National Reconstruction and also as Nicaragua’s vice president from 1985Á1990. Given his extensive direct experience of the events that captured the world’s imagination for more than a decade and his impressive talents as a writer, Sergio Ramırez is the perfect person to tell this story. Adios Muchachos is an entirely appropriate choice for Duke University’s Latin America in Translation collection, part of the ‘‘American Encounters/Global Interactions’’series, which, editors Gilbert M. Joseph and Emily S. Rosenberg explain,‘‘aims to stimulate critical perspectives and fresh interpretive frameworks for scholarship on the history of the imposing global presence of the United States.’’Ramırez provides profound insights into the US political system in relation to his country’s revolution, which he characterizes in the following way in the chapter entitled ‘‘Manifest Destiny’’:‘‘Anti-imperialism was always the mostReview: Literature and Arts of the Americas ISSN 0890-5762 print/ISSN 1743-0666 online© 2013 Steven F.
