The electronically excitedstates of indole and substituted indoles have recently attracted considerable interest in the context of understanding the spectral and excited-state dynamical properties of tryptophanyl side chains within proteins. 1 Condensed-phase studies2 using fluorescence polarization techniques have shown the presence of two overlapping rr. rr* electronic states, designated* Lb and'La. Further evidence for the existence of these two states has been derived from studies of solvent perturbations of the absorption and emission band positions. 3 These investigations imply that the* La electronic state is much more sensitive to solvent polarity, exhibiting large stabilization energies in polar media. To date, however, there has been no unambiguous identification of the* La state in either the high-resolution absorption spectrum of room temperature indole vapor4 or fluorescence excitation
