Rat weight gains and dental caries, in relation to salivary gland weights, flow rates and microbial data, were compared in three groups of sucrose-fed rats, provided with NCP2, NAV456 (1:1.5) or MIT-200 (less the sucrose component) as essential nutrient supplements, at isocaloric equivalents by intubation or natural feeding. Rats intubated with NCP2 had significantly lower animal body weights, water and sucrose intake, salivary gland weights, salivary flow rates, but higher counts of plaqueStreptococcus mutansthan the other two nutrient supplement groups. Although not statistically significant, caries rates tended to be higher in the NCP2-fed group.
