WHEN a dispersion of solid or liquid particles in air, such as a spray, smoke, or fog, is subjected to a radiant flux, energy is absorbed by the par-ticles, the temperature of the particles rises, and energy is transferred from the particles to the air. If the particles have an appreciable vapor pressure, mass is also transferred to the gas phase. This article presents the results of a theoreti-cal investigation of the over-all process. Consideration is limited to spherical particles and to applications in which eddy transfer is negligible—ie, gener-ally to particles of 100 microns or less in diameter.
