Styrene has been copolymerized with cinnamic acid in varying concentrations in benzene at 60" C., with azoisobutyronitrile as initiator; the cinnamic acid was labeled with carbon-14 in the 01 position. The presence of carboxylic acid groups along the copolymer chain will confer solution properties on the material different from those of pure polystyrene. The polymerizations were followed dilatometrically at 60 f 0.03" and allowed to proceed to about 2% conversion. The copolymer was precipitated three times with ethanol from a solution in benzene, to remove detectable quantities of the labeled cinnamic acid. Its activity was determined by assay as carbon dioxide in a gas counter.'Viscosity measurements were made on solutions of four samples of the copolymer in benzene by means of a suspended-level viscometer of the compact form. 2 Measure-
