~hysiology and Pathology Mouth breathing places the subject at a distinct physiological and pathological disadvantage; the full extent of which, more often than not, is never appreciated unless relieved. The associated oral stigmata have been described as increased caries, inflamed and swollen gums but whilst much of this has yet to be substantiated, the general medical sequelae are certainly far more deleterious as a vicious chain reaction is started, cutting deeper into those organic processes based on respiration. The role of the nose is more than an air conditioner to the respiratory system; for instance, control of respiration is neuromuscular, monitored by various receptor mechanisms. The nose is particularly rich in this respect whilst the mouth is not: consequently use of this airway deprives the respiratory centre of these important afferent stimuli. The long term result of this respiratory dysfunction can be impaired thoracic development Donald J. Timms, l.D.S., D.Orth.R.C.S.Eng. Royal Infirmary, Preston, Lanes
