In the study of brain anoxia and ischemia, the main topic has been the reversibility of the neuronal function during ischemic episode. It is well known that anoxia or ischemia cause critical damage to the brain function as well as brain metabolism, and according to the clinical literature 8–10 min of complete ischemia of normothermic brain is enough to cause irreversible loss of brain function1. Among experimental investigators, however, there is still controversy regarding the critical time for the reversibility of neuronal damage after anoxia or ischemia of neuronal tissue2.
