The interaction of VO2+with different monophosphate nucleotides, as well as with D-ribose and D-ribose-5-phosphate, has been studied as a function of pH by electron absorption spectroscopy. The systems are highly pH-dependent, and different coordination spheres are generated around the metal center, with raising pH. Spectrophotometric titrations at pH = 11.0 demonstrates the formation of 2:1 ligand-to-metal complexes in which VO2+interacts only with the ribose moieties of the nucleotides. Thymidine monophosphate, the only investigated deoxyribonucleotide, shows a different behavior, in comparison to the other systems.
