This chapter contains research which was conducted to determine variables that characterize adolescents who show escalation in substance use over the period from early to middle adolescence. Report data from a study that provides a direct examination of escalation during adolescence and tests theoretical predictions about the process is also included in this article. Study participants were 1,702 adolescents in public school districts in lower Westchester County, New York with the average age of 12.4 years. The data were obtained through a self-report questionnaire administered to students in classrooms by project staff over the period of students' 7th, 8th, and 9th grade years. Report findings include the influence that measured psychosocial variables have as predictors of escalation, and the contrast between experimenters and abstainers. This chapter also includes a discussion of the theoretical impact of these findings.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
