In 1952, Lowe’described three cases of mental and physical retardation with hyporeflexia, decreased muscle tone, rickets, cataracts and glaucoma. This syndrome has been recognized with increasing frequency in the past few years. In 1959, Franr; ois2 reviewed the ocular findings in 12 cases; in 1963, Wilson3 added eight cases to 23 reported in the literature; Chutorian4 reviewed 46 cases in 1966; and Haut6 compiled 55 cases in the most recent review. Pathologic study of the eyes has been reported only in three cases6’g diagnosed prior to death and in one caselo suspected by the general autopsy findings. The ocular pathology in this disease may be so specific that the diagnosis can be made on this basis alone. The demonstration of these findings in two strikingly similar cases provided the stimulus for this paper. Case 1 was originally presented at the 1963 meeting of the Verhoeff Society in Washington, DC, by Dr. Lorenz E. Zimmerman. It was subsequently used to illustrate the paper on “Congenital malformations of the eye” by Zimmerman and Font. g This case is presented here to record the clinical history and to reveal how dramatically similar are the histopathologic changes in this case campared with one studied at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (Case 2).
