Blood flow in the forearms of normal men aged 20-40 was measured plethysmographically. Measurements were made simultane-ously on the right and left forearm after the radial, median and ulnar nerves of the left arm had been blocked above the elbow by injn. of 4% procaine in 1/50,000 adrenaline. Both limbs were immersed in water at 35[degree]C. Blood flow in the blocked arm was found to be approx. double that in the control. Evidence is presented to show that the results are not due (1), to a natural difference between the right and left forearm; (2), to the accidental release of some sympathetic tone in the skin circulation; (3), to paralysis of tone in the skeletal muscle; (4), to adrenaline vasodilatation in the skeletal muscle; (5), to release of tone in the arterial tree and passive increase in skin flow. It is concluded that vasodilatation was mainly due to paralysis of vasoconstrictor fibers in the forearm muscle and that releasing sympathetic tone throughout the body musculature might increase its blood flow by 11/2 l./min.
