Drugs of abuse that affect natural and acquired immune defenses could definitely alter an individuals susceptibility to life-threatening fungal infections. Although specific studies in which drugs of abuse have been used will not be reported here, it is anticipated that the ensuing discussion of the natural effector cells and their potential for limiting fungal infections may suggest how such drugs, especially those that alter natural killer (NK) cell and T cell functions, predispose an individual to infections with the yeast-like organism,Cryptococcus neoformans.
