The pH of Corning 015 soda-lime silicate glass was measured in water and salt solutions at different temperatures as a function of treatment time. The pH increased to a maximum and then decreased. This pH change was modeled as resulting from a sequence of chemical reactions, and the resulting rate constants discussed. The infrared absorption of the hydrated layers showed contributions from SiOH groups, molecularly adsorbed water and hydrogen bonding. Reaction rates were higher in salt solutions than in water.
