Examined the nature and scalp distribution of selective attention effects on somatosensory event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and the effect of delivery rate on 8 Ss (mean age 21 yrs). Stimuli consisted of constant-current pulses (. 5-msec duration) delivered to the palmar surface of the middle and distal phalanges of the right and left index fingers. Either a weak (the standard) or strong (the target) shock was delivered to each finger. Interstimulus intervals were varied according to 300-msec periods. Ss were instructed to attend to either the left or right hand and to count the number of targets. Results indicate that N1 was insensitive to experimental manipulations of attention and delivery rate. The effects of selective attention on ERP components were most marked in the amplitude of P2 and N2 (except for P300). Principal components analysis revealed a component, Factor 2, that was maximally active over this time region with a pattern of attention-related effects at the lateral sites highly similar to that observed in P2 and N2 amplitudes. Somatosensory processing negativity was larger in targets than in standards on the attended hand, which appeared to be an attention effect. The contralateral dominance of this component may reflect modality-specific processing of those stimulus qualities relevant to the task—the spatial location of the stimulus and its relative intensity.(9 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
