The measurement of ultrasonic attenuation in a magnetic fluid (MF) is carried out to investigate the properties of frequency and magnetic field dependence in an ultrasonic propagation medium. The reference method for the ultrasonic attenuation measurement is explained and is executed by a pulse reflection system in the frequency range from 1 to 15 MHz. The magnetic field dependence of attenuation in a MF is measured with a pulse transmission system at a field strength from 0 to 0.2T. Experimental results show that: 1) the attenuation constant divided by the frequency squared, α/f 2 , is almost constant (0.5 X 10 -l5 s 2 /cm) over a frequency of 3.5MHz. 2) Relative changes in attenuation, Δα, in the magnetic field are less than 2 dB over the frequency range from 1 to 15 MHz. Surface topographical profiling of drilled holes in an aluminum plate is carried out to demonstrate the usefulness of a MF as an ultrasonic propagation medium.
