An increase in the number of fatal accidents involving Danish cyclists was the reason for this study. 89 police reported accidents of some frequent accident situations were analysed with the aim of making proposals for accident prevention. Most of the accidents involving children and elderly cyclists may be explained by their inadequate perception and failure to give way. Accidents involving children were often caused by a combination of too high a bicycle speed at intersections with poor visibility conditions. One-cyclist accidents in the 25-64 year old age group are often caused by illness or drunken driving. In accidents involving children and elderly cyclists, the driver often couldn't avoid the accident. But in some cases, the driver was either inattentive to the cyclist's behaviour or was driving too fast. When a vehicle overtakes or hits a cyclist from behind, the driver's poor lateral distance, inattention, too high vehicle speed or drunk-driving are often contributing accident factors. Information to children and elderly people should concentrate on the necessity of adequate perception and, possibly stopping to give right-of-way. As regards drivers, the importance of always observing the speed limits should be stressed as well as the necessity of paying special attention to children and elderly cyclists.
