ABSTRACT When examined in chronic preparations of healthy animals that have fully recovered from experimental surgery, the integrated functions of intestinal hydrolytic enzymes coupled to transport systems for the uptake of nutrients have very different properties from those observed in acute experiments or in isolated preparations.
