In order to distinguish between changes in activity and reactivity in selectively bred strains of Drosophila melanogaster the response of active, inactive and control populations was measured over 25 successive min. in a circular runway. Fitting a regression equation of the form Y + A + b log10x showed that the rate of decrease in scoring was greater for both the experimental populations than for the control. The asymptotes of this decay did not overlap for any of the 3 populations. The results show an increase in reactivity in both experimental populations, but the similarity of the active and inactive strains indicated that the primary phenotypic difference between them is in terms of their level of spontaneous activity. The similarity is due to a decrease in the genetic variability of the experimental lines.
