This paper contains wind-tunnel measurements of the forces and torques on an American football. The data were taken at a wind speed of 60 miles h−1, at spin rates of approximately 100 and 600 rpm, and extend over a range of wind angles from 0 to 60°. At small wind angles the data show a linear dependence on the wind angle, with slopes that are consistent with other observations. A side force dependent on the spin rate is also present at non-zero wind angles, but is not accompanied by a corresponding torque. The data do not show significant variations with roll angle; and consequently all of the data presented are roll-averaged.
