In the Twickenham Edition, Geoffrey Tillotson explains that the ‘shining Altars of Japan’(III. 107) in Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock (1714) are ‘lacquered tables’. 2 Tillotson’s note merits elucidation, as ‘lacquered’suggests that the furniture utilizes genuine lacquer, even though ‘Japan’derives from japanning, the European technique of imitating lacquer. This article proposes possibilities for Pope’s ‘Japan’, by identifying differing styles of heterogeneous furnishings that employed eastern materials and western technologies.
