Superparasitism (multiple parasites in a single host) is one of the most significant examples of density-dependent intraspecific competition among insect parasitoids. In this study, we showed that multiple parasitism byBlissoxenos esakii(Insecta, Strepsiptera) induce earlier adult emergence than solitary parasitism (single parasite in a host). Superparasitism creates conditions wherein multiple strepsipteran larvae must compete for the limited (two) exit spaces on the host body for their emergence as adults. As a result, selection might have favored strepsipterans that shortened the period of larval growth, so that they can emerge earlier. Thus, superparasitism causes a dramatic change in the life history of strepsipteran.
