CAMPTOBASIDIUM hydrophilum gen. et sp. nov. (Auriculariales, s. l.) with an anamorph, CRUCELLA subtilis anam. gen. et sp. nov., are described. The anamorph was isolated from decaying leaves collected in a stream in Alabama [USA]. After prolonged incubation in water, the teleomorph developed in pure cultures of the anamorph. The fungus produces dikaryotic mycelium with clamp connections. Primary and secondary septa formed by the dikaryotic mycelium are simple with a small central pore. Auricularioid basidia are scattered singly in the mycelial mat after submergence; they are bent and bear clusters of sessile basidiospores on each basidial segment. Monoblastic conidiogenous cells become empty and collapsed after producing a single conidium. The mitospores (conidia) are typically tetraradiate. During germination, conidia empty their cytoplasmic contents into germ tubes and form retraction septa in the conidium body. When grown in dual culture, hyphae of C. hydrophilum make contact with and coil around the hyphae of the other fungi suggesting that the species can be parasitic.
