DeBellet al. recorded the electrical activity of somatic muscle cells ofAscaris lumbricoidesvar.suumwith conventional micro-electrodes inserted into the "protoplasmic" bulbs of the cells. The mean resting potential was about 30 mV. This was interrupted, 1.5 to 7 times per sec., by slow spontaneous waves, lasting up to 0.2 sec., on each of which was superimposed a spike of maximum about 10 mV (rising time about 22 msec.). External or internal stimulation of the muscle cells failed to elicit propagated electrical activity but electrical stimulation in the region of the nerve cord gave rise to muscle potentials similar to the spontaneous ones. Conduction to the muscle cells was about 6 cm. per sec. Hyperpolarization of muscle cells by means of the micro-electrodes suppressed the spike potentials in the injected and surrounding muscle cells. It was concluded that the neuro-muscular junctions inAscarisare established between elements of the nerve cords and a syncytium which branches off into the spindles (the contractile units) of the muscle cells.
