Inertial oscillations on the continental shelf have been studied with a theoretical model and spectral analysis of numerous time series (Millot and Crepon, 1981); the mean temperature over a specific depth interval including the thermocline was supposed to be representative of the amplitude of the internal waves in the inertial frequency hand. To estimate better the vertical displacements due to these waves, we take into account the vertical temperature gradient. Such an analysis improves the accuracy of some of the results already obtained, the method is extended to measurements in almost homogeneous layers, and the reliability of the theory is increased.
